The GfK Telecontrol AG is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GfK AG in Nuremberg, Germany. GfK is a globally active company devoted exclusively to market research and is present in more than 70 countries with 130 companies.
The GfK Telecontrol AG is part of GfK’s MEDIA sector and is comprised of two departments: Marketing & Media Research is responsible for the marketing and management of the whole company, Research & Development develops and produces the measuring technology.
The GfK Telecontrol AG was founded in 1981 by Prof. Dr. Matthias Steinmann and employs currently 35 people (hardware and software electronics engineers, media research and marketing staff). For more than 20 years, Telecontrol is one of the leading providers of electronic audience measurement systems and Telecontrol was the first company to provide electronic television audience measurement systems. The Telecontrol System was first introduced in Germany in 1985, followed by Switzerland in the same year.
GFK AG has comprehensive expertise when it comes to setting up representative media panels. With 6,200 households, GFK Fernesehforschung’s TV panel, for example, is one of the largest systems of this type in the world. Up-to-the second ratings are recorded electronically on the TV set and differentiated analysis applied subsequently. Another trailblazer in terms of method and technology is the Radiocontrol system used to record radio ratings in Switzerland with the aid of electronic metering devices incorporated into wristwatches, which are worn by radio listeners.
